It all seemed pretty simple when this classic poster was printed for the Nov. 16, 1965 Clay-Liston rematch at Boston Garden - before all hell broke loose, turning the poster into an anomaly of boxing history. First, the still-unrenamed Clay, who “shook up the world” beating Liston in Miami Beach the year before, needed emergency hernia surgery, KO’ing the event. Then, after the bout was rescheduled it was kicked out of Boston because of financial haggling and state politicking and landed in Lewiston, Maine, mainly because nobody else would take it. Perhaps it was best the fight was moved - Clay’s phantom KO punch might’ve cause riots in Beantown. 7 x 11” poster with the two fighters’ b&w images is a knockout with neon-like black and red lettering and the Garden misidentified as “Gardens”.
