In 1948, the AL went into the All-Star game without the great third baseman George Kell who was out with an injured ankle. There was more bad news for the AL. DiMaggio and Williams were limited to pinch hitting duty because of injuries. The AL appeared to be ripe for the taking. St. Louis’ Sportsman’s Park would provide the site where the National League would take advantage of their good fortune. Like many of the best laid plans it didn’t work out that way for the National League. Despite hometown hero Stan Musial going deep, the NL fell 5-2. The 29 signatures on this Harridge American League ball average 8s and 9s overall, (but for Joe DiMaggio which has slightly bled and lightened). Features autographs of Ted Williams, Larry “Yogi” Berra, Hal Newhouser, Chuck Dressen, Bob Lemon, Lou Boudreau, Joe Gordon, Ken Keltner, George Kell, Bucky Harris and Bobby Doerr. All signatures are in blue fountain pen. Ball is graded NRMT 7 by PSA/DNA.
