Two remarkable big league scorecards dating to the 1880s. Identical covers depicting mustachioed players in a circular area ringed by multi-colored patterns opening to centerfold scorecards. One is blank inside -- apparently a proof. Intact scorecard is from an April, 10, 1886 game between the American Association’s Brooklyn Grays against Yale, a Grays spring training contest (others were against Princeton and Columbia). Charted in pencil, with a rudimentary scoring system marking a “0” or “1” for each player’s at-bat, depending on if he scored or not - indicating a 6-1 Brooklyn win. Cover has a dashing image of mustachioed Grays player Will. F. Krieg. Other has the image of Cincinnati Red Stockings (also AA) pitcher John G. “Long John” Reilly but no further game info. Both pieces are, amazingly, EX w/a tiny slit of along the lower spine fold of the Krieg, the Reilly w/slight creasing. Great local Brooklyn ads in the Krieg card. 4 x 6” covers, 6 x 7.5” opened.
