Three beyond-classic photos of Grover Cleveland Alexander during his Phillies days (1911-197), before his boozing became an open secret in baseball. Even back then, “Old Pete” was a curious sight, looking far older than his years with his baggy uniforms, too-small caps, and craggy face, yet on the mound he was a thing of beauty. He won 30 or more games three straight years, 1915-17, and led the NL in every important pitching statistic at least once. His 16 shutouts in 1916 is still the ML record. His most storied moment came in ’26 with the Cards, when he beat the Yankees in Game 6 of the WS, then saved Game 7 while in a drunken stupor. Small photos are mounted onto larger cardboard backing measuring 5.5 x 9”and stamped “Culver Pictures” on back. He is shown gripping the ball (3 x 5”), throwing before a game (4 x 4.5”) and taking a swing with a packed grandstand in the background (4 x 5”). All photos EX-MT, NRMT as mounted.
