Few ever saw the prickly Georgia Peach at the close range of this intimate photo. Don’t let the smile fool you. Cobb’s hawk-like eyes betray the inner fire that stoked him and left many a spike scar on the hides of infielders who tried to tag him out. 6.5 x 8.5” photo is from later in Cobb’s illustrious career, possibly when he was player-manager of the Tigers in the early-mid ‘20s, and shows him with crow’s feet around those burning eyes and perhaps a bit of weariness playing the heavy for so long. Back has the stamping “Keystone View Co. Inc. of N.Y.” and a handwritten pencil notation “’Ty’ Cobb”. Photo G-VG w/light wrinkling and border damage/soiling in spots.
