Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938 menu from the cruise ship R.M.S. Ausonia signed by Marty Barry, Syd Howe, Larry Aurie, Walter Buswell, Red Wings captain Ebbie Goodfellow, Al Motter, Doug Young, Carl Liscombe, etc. The cruise was to show NHL hockey in Europe and featured the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. It marked the first time that NHL teams were to play overseas. Among the Montreal Canadiens was the ill-fated Babe Siebert, who would drown a year later, a few days before he was to become the team’s coach (leading to the first NHL All-Star Game to be played in his honor). The teams left by train on April 5th to Halifax, before embarking on the cruise. On April 19th they arrived in London. They played before a sellout crowd at London’s Empress Hall. After playing a second game in London they shifted to Paris for an additional 3 exhibitions. Then it was back to England for 4 more games before returning home. There were thoughts of going to Nazi Germany but those plans were cancelled. Signatures in black pen have a thick, bold flow and average 8-9/10. 8.5 x 10.5”. Menu has a delicate Oriental motif on the cover depicting a young lady with a parasol strolling through a garden. “Easter Greetings” and the Cunard White Star cruise ship logo printed in gold against a lime green background. Overall VG w/a few creases/foxing along the edges, with the interior menu near pristine.
