It’s a given now that I-Rod will be receiving a Gold Glove each winter for being the best defensive catcher in his league (it’s happened 11 times in 13 years), but the distinction of this magnificent black strongbox that accompanies the award is that it marks the first time Rodriguez won a Gold Glove -- after his first complete season with the Rangers, when he turned a ripe old 20. The box measures approx. 11 x 13” across the hinged top and 6” top to bottom, and reads “Rawlings Gold Glove Award” and “Palm Beach Blazer of Champions Special Edition” in gold. Underside of the box has a gold plaque engraved: “Presented to Ivan Rodriguez, Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Catcher, American League, 1992 Season.” Other spoils of the award that that have remained in the box include a black display piece with 8 gold pins in the shape of catcher’s mitts affixed to a black felt cushion, a 4 x 4” gold Palm Beach piece signed by I-Rod in black marker, and a gold toy truck bank reading “American League Gold Glove Award” in black on each side and “1993” under the cab windows. Condition of these items is NRMT though some of the writing has rubbed off the truck. Box itself is EX-MT with a few dings and chippings that hardly affect the stately nature of the enclosure that comes with one of baseball’s biggest awards. The only one we have ever seen.
