The Fighting Marine, who retired undefeated as heavyweight champ in 1928, was a beloved elder statesman when he wrote these three letters to N.Y. Post columnist Leonard Lyons. First dated Aug. 2, 1950 on Denman Tire & Rubber Co. letterhead (8.5 x 11"), declining invite to the Robinson-Fusari fight. Others dated Dec. 14, 1964 and April 22, 1965 on Tunney's personal Park Avenue stationery (7 x 10.5"), latter ribbing that when he saw Lyons in a watering hole, "I feel that the joint is 'kosher.'" All signed "Gene" in black or blue pen. First letter VG w/brown staining on bottom and right, other two are NRMT.
