This amazing cache of markers represents a "signal" event in football history -- the first game flags were used to signal penalties, in an Oct. 17, 1941 game between Youngstown College & Oklahoma City University. The two red flags here (designed by Youngstown coach Dwight "Dike" Beede) replaced the old custom of refs blowing a horn for an infraction. (The practice caught on in the pro game in 1948.) Other items include game whistles, a horn apparently used to signify the end of each half, and a gold lifetime pass issued in 1956 by the E.I.F.A. (in a sleeve with the conference's full name) to ref John McPhee, who'd worked that notable game. A bonanza for gridiron historians.
