Willard Brown was one of the Negro Leagues premier home-run hitters in the 1940's. He was a slugger who was extraordinarily fast in the field, an excellent base runner and outstanding with his glove, not to mention had an arm like a rocket. Brown was nicknamed "Esse Hombre" in Puerto Rico where he played winter ball. He won three consecutive batting titles (1946-50) with averages of .390, 432, and .352; he retired with an outstanding average of .350. Brown would go on to serve his country in World War II from 1944-45, where he would partake in the invasion of Normandy. Shortly after Jackie Robinson debuted in the major leagues Brown made his debut with the St. Louis Browns. His lone major league home-run was the first ever hit in the American League by a black player. This card has a tiny bit of stock loss to the bottom left corner and the smallest nick of stock loss to the right border but otherwise presents EX-MT. It is a timeless image of this gifted athlete and American hero.
