Submitted for your approval, the finest known specimen of the only baseball card of the greatest Negro League player who ever lived if not the greatest player period, Josh Gibson. This Joshua Gibson 1950-51 Toleteros has been graded an SGC 88 NM-MT 8. Having been graded and authenticated by the venerable Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC), it is near flawless, extremely well centered, with sharp corners and edges. Less than a dozen of these cards are known to exist. The card has been dubbed "The Black Wagner" because of similarities in both condition and scarcity to the finest graded specimen of the fabled T206 Honus Wagner card, which has sold for $1.265 million at auction. Earlier this year an SGC 50 VG-EX Gibson sold privately for $42,000. Based on that price and grade, it is the norm for cards of this ilk to sell for 300-500% more in this condition. The card is a riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside an enigma. Why was a Gibson card issued 3 years after his death? Simply, he was the best of the best. The best to ever play in Puerto Rico (he ended his career there) why not issue his card in their first full color set. Also, the nature of the beast in the Caribbean is to not hold fast and true to any specific formula in product development. Aptly, there were no other cards issued in any Toleteros sets of a player no longer in the game. There have been some less valued opinions that this was not the Josh Gibson at all, but his son Josh Gibson Jr. Jr. tried to follow in his father's massive footsteps. However, Josh Jr., was a slight man, a mere sliver compared with his burly dad, who stood 6'1" and 215 pounds. We now have undeniable proof in the form of a January 7, 1940 Puerto Rican scorecard from a complete bound volume (a remarkable item in its own right is being offered separately in this auction). This issue has on its cover none other than the exact same image of Josh Gibson Sr. that appears on the 1950-51 Toleteros card! In 1940, Josh Jr. was 10 years old. Lelands.com has pledged throughout its history to bring you the best and most cutting edge pieces in the collectibles world. Yes indeed this card is cutting edge. And without a doubt one of the finest baseball cards in the world.
