One of the most important Cuban baseball photos extant. We have never seen anything like it in terms of its complexity and age. Image of the 1887-88 Habana team (incredibly early for Caribbean baseball) shows center shot of the officers of the club quite dapper in their suits. Proudly draped across them is a wonderful 1886-87 “Championship” flag handcolored in red. Included in their midst is the only vintage image we have ever seen of the Father of Cuban Baseball, Emilio Sabourin. Surrounding are 10 oval vignettes of the players dressed in their baseball shirts including Cuban HOFers Adolfo Lujan, El Ingles Garcia. Our favorite added touches are additional handpainted images of a baseball, crossed bats, pillbox caps, and believe it or not a fingerless mitt with hand inside! Photographer’s cartouche N.E. Maceo at bottom right. There is water-staining and the matte hides faults to the corners and edges. However the images are strong (EX) and you cannot pick and choose with pieces of this import. Image is 16x11” and is housed in 23x17” antique wood frame of the period.
