This fabulous find -- Jerry West's personal equipment bag from his rookie season of 1960-61 -- has double meaning for NBA historians. Not only is it one of the rarer West items, its baby blue color brands it as an anomaly, since as hardcore Laker junkies know the team aced that color for a darker navy blue on their uniforms and equipment when it moved from Minneapolis to L.A. that season (the purple and gold came around in the late '60s). For a time, the club used old baby blue bags re-screened "Los Angeles Lakers" until new ones came in. Thus, the bag is a very authentic vintage West item and echo of his heralded entry into the league as the No. 2 draft pick from West Virginia (his coach was even brought in to pilot the team). West's rookie stats -- 17.8 ppg -- was an appetizer for things to come and he and Elgin Baylor took the Lakers to a 2nd place finish in the West. The bag has his legendary "44" screened on either side in white. Measures approx. 24" across the zippered top and 11" from top to bottom and 11" wide. Numerous markings of damage including a slash of brown soiling on the front to the left of the team name, discoloration on the handles, and one of the strap patches is slightly torn off. Clearly, Mr. Clutch played the game hard, and packed a bag hard.
