Step right up! Charles Eisenmann, who photographed many of the freaks in P.T. Barnum's circus, captures the promoter himself in an 1886 cabinet portrait signed by Barnum. Cabinet photo is a standard 4 x 6" and has faded to ghostly effect with Barnum in a tuxedo, appearing to rise from vapor. Yet details of his aging face are unmistakable -- he was only five years from his death. Brown border with Eisnmann signature and address is scratched and there is minor peeling of cardboard layers. The back has Eisenmann's New York studio stamp. Sepia image illuminates Barnum as a benevolent father of entertainment. Eisenmann would have treated the Bearded Lady with no less love.
