Political hardball and baseball form a fascinating mix in this broadside advertising a Dominican Winter League game starring Josh Gibson in 1937. The typeface design hits in this 8- by 20-inch poster. Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo lured Gibson and Satchel Paige from the Negro Leagues to play for his team, Ciudad Trujillo B.B.C., which was held under armed guard. It won the title while backers tub-thumped for Trujillo's re-election. This browned cardboard poster combines a Trujillo doubleheader against a team of national all-stars and a political rally. Gibson, of course, is mentioned prominently. For the record, Trujillo won also. One of two known to exist, both unique.
