Cum Posey, a former Duquesne star athlete, took over ownership of the Grays in the '20s and turned them into the best black team in the East. But the Depression ruined him, and when he lost his best players, including Josh Gibson, to the rival Pittsburgh Crawfords, who were owned by racketeer Gus Greenlee, Posey found a racketeeer of his own to keep the team alive, Rufus "Sonnyman" Jackson, who became co-owner.
