The East-West game at Comiskey Park was an annual tradition that became the showcase event of the Negro Leagues, the players were chosen by the fans, who participated in polls printed in black newspapers. By 1939, the hottest players were receiving as much as half a million votes each! For many years there was also a second unofficial Negro League All Star game played during the season. This second game afforded more fans the opportunity to see the Negro League’s greatest stars in action, on the same field together. Offered is a program to the unofficial East-West All Star Game, played on August 27 1939 at Yankee Stadium in New York. The 12-page program is very similar to the regular season Yankee program, but custom printed specifically for this game. Pre-printed lineups include Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Willie Wells, Leon Day, and Mule Suttles for the East, and Turkey Stearnes, and manager Oscar Charleston for the West. The East won 10-2. Unscored, with a few game-related notations in Spanish written in pencil outside of the scorers boxes. Light vertical crease, very flat, no tears, technically VG-EX with an Excellent appearance. In superb condition, especially considering the fragile nature of paper stock. This is the first example of this program we have ever seen. Comes with an original 8x10" photograph of Buck Leonard in his Grays uniform, posing with family and friends at Yankee Stadium, which we believe was taken at this 1939 East-West All Star game.
