Where have you gone, Jack Kerouac? The "Beat Generation" avatar who wrote the classic novel of disillusionment, "On the Road", in 1957 is gone 25 years now but his observations and biting wit are so missed that the original draft of "On the Road" -- for which Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay paid $3 million in 2002 -- was given a national tour this year of museums and libraries. Kerouac wrote this $40 check to The Village Shop on April 24, 1959, leaving a brilliant and much-sought-after signature that rates EX-MT, as does the light brown check.
