Those in the stands at Three Rivers Stadium on September 30, 1972 knew they were witnessing history when during a 5-0 win over the Mets Clemente doubled off Jon Matlack in the 4th inning for his 3,000th career hit. What no one could know was that it not only would be Clemente's final hit but that this would be the last day they would ever see him alive. On New Year's Eve 1972, he was killed when his mercy flight for earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean. That ultimate act of sacrifice turned Clemente into a Saint-like figure, and the hard-to-find ticket stubs from that bittersweet final game have a special quality. These 3 box seat stubs from the game have been authenticated. The pink ducats with the Pirate logo are from Seats 6, 7 & 8 in Box 61, Row Q and are in NRMT condition.
