Enchanting Wrigley Field cardboard advertising display features HOFer, Harold “Red” Grange. The piece is unparalleled in terms of both quality and significance. Grange was the first superstar athlete in American professional football, earning iconic status while he was at the University of Illinois. A national celebrity by the time he completed his illustrious college career, Grange was a huge factor in the success and marketability of the Chicago Bears. In essence, he was one of the very first “sports celebrities” in America. Display advertises, “FOOTBALL! Wrigley Field the Chicago Bears” with a game schedule for the 1929 season. During the Golden Twenties, the Bears were drawing crowds of over 36,000 at Wrigley Field, and most of those fans were there solely to witness the legendary skill of the Hall-of-Fame halfback known as the Galloping Ghost. Red Grange was the most important player in the history of professional football, largely responsible for the popularization of pro-ball. Interestingly, the ad display shows Grange in throwing motion, as a quarterback, emphasizing the depth of this athlete’s versatility. Virtually no damage with a few creases throughout. A world-class display piece of the Golden Twenties. EX.
