Fabulous collection of baskets emanate from a Native American museum in the State of Maine. A unique blend of different baskets they are all wholly native to Maine. Most are made from birch bark and laced together with slit roots from cedar trees. Many use sweet grass, harvested along the coast, giving them uniqueness in basket making, as it is very hard to find and used sparingly because of its rarity. There is some sweetgrass that is thrown in the lot dating well over 50 years old. These baskets herein are among the earliest types made by Maine Indians and used for storing (nuts, dried fruits and meats), sewing, and other day-to-day uses. They are all 19th century and date from the 1840s-1880s. Condition ranges from very good to excellent with a missing handle or two.
