Stunning 5-pager with stirring content addressed to Pirates manager Fred Haney. Dated September 14, 1954. It offers “unasked for” and very specific advice from the batting master who seems a bit lonely and overall unappreciated by MLB with this letter: I noticed that [Thomas] is in sort of a slump. He has an exaggerated position of hands and bat, so long as he does well never suggest a change but when he gets into a slump then he will be glad to have your suggestion. Drop his hands some not too much, his bat is too far behind his head and too high, in coming from the position as you see into a proper parallel swing the heavy end of the bat has to take a dip and will not be true in swinging… Most important is that his hands and elbow should be well away from his body also for true better body balance crouch him a little from his wait up, this boy must have ability, from his record, if he slumps offer these changes in practice and he will appreciate your help also you knowledge, from the position as shown I would say he might have trouble with a ball around his knees, his left elbow if every good except he might elevate it a little more and with more of a crouch and bending over from his waist wand with what he has naturally he should be pulled out of a slump and of course possibly even improve.” Signed “Ty,” with original envelope and on scarce Ty Cobb Nevada stationery. Some toning o/w NRMT.
