Two large copper one-cent coins dated 1847 and 1851 are accompanied by two incredible signed statements cementing their authenticity. The 1847 coin comes with typed statement from Jesse James’ daughter-in-law Stella James. Dated September 5, 1955, the coin was “put aside for Jesse James when he was born and carried it for years.” The same letter also refers to the 1851 coin stating, “was given by Jesse James when he acted as pallbearer for a member of the Stigers family in St. Joseph Mo. To Fannie Quantrill Stigers.” Stella also goes on to note that; “Both coins are now the property of Carl W. Breihan, St. Louis.” The coins are accompanied by a splendid typed statement dated April 1950. signed by “Wm. Louis Stigers.” It states, “Dear Mr. Breihan, This will confirm the fact that the large penny you have [dated 1851] was given to my mother [Fannie Quantrill Stigers] June of 1877 by Jesse James, at the time of her death of her brother John Salle, Jr. and at whose funeral Jesse James was one of the pallbearers.” Carl W. Breihan wrote the book The Man Who Shot Jesse James considered by Stella James to be an accurate, factual and unbiased account. These are incredibly rare and personal Jesse James keepsakes with impeccable provenance.
