Rare original photo of the 1943 Homestead Grays World Champions, the first of nine consecutive Grays teams to win the Negro National League pennant includes Josh Gibson. The normally seen team photo of the 1943 Grays does not show Josh Gibson, as he was in a mental hospital in Washington, D.C. at this time. This is the only one known to show Josh in the image. This mental hospital was a major factor in contributing to the fact that Gibson was not chosen for the white Major Leagues. Team lineup includes Dan Bankhead, Hank Thompson, Ray Brown, Cool Papa Bell, Buck Leonard, and more. 8x10” photo appears to be from a newspaper file and demands further research. EX+ condition, with no damage. Contrast is superb.
