Original photo from the early 1900’s shows Roger Bresnahan with a live bear. This was taken while he was a player on the Cubs. The animal was used as a mascot to draw more fans. Bresnahan is shown actually trying to teach the bear how to catch. The bear’s claws are in protective mittens and his mouth is muzzled. One of the onlookers surrounding the spectacle is wearing a Toledo uniform, implying that this was taken in Toledo. This was the first incarnation of a mascot in modern baseball. Photo measures 6.5x4.5”. Excellent condition, except for .5” tear in the paper towards top edge. Contrast and quality of photo is superb.
