A true piece of American history. These suede and leather moccasins with elaborate beading were worn by Jim Thorpe while starring in football and getting his formal education at the Carlisle Indian School circa 1912. These come directly from the collection of Jim Thorpe through his wife Patricia Thorpe. This proud pair were obtained from Mrs. Thorpe along with other important Jim Thorpe pieces by pioneer sports collector Joel Platt in 1970. The moccasins will come with a letter of provenance from Joel Platt and a copy of the original 1970 telegram that Patricia Thorpe sent to Mr. Platt, basically telling him to “come and get Jim’s things.” The moccasins are believed to be from the Carlisle era based on the style of the moccasins themselves (they are a pure Arts and Crafts/Mission style of the period plus they came along with other Native American relics from this era. They are in very good condition with only wear to the insoles and 90% of the beading intact. A piece of true importance, it crosses the bridge between sports and history, between cultures of the original Native America and the commerciality of today’s U.S.A.
