An historic signature from the Gentleman Champion Jim Corbett of immeasurable proportions. Penned on the very day of one of the most important fights in the history of boxing, it is signed with the exact date. On September 7, 1892, James Corbett met John L. Sullivan in the first gloved championship bout, adhering to the Marquis of Queensbury Rules. Corbett KO’d Sullivan in the 21st round, using a far superior boxing strategy. Photo shows Corbett in fighting stance (no gloves). Inscription and signature read, “To my old friend Jim Horne, with best wishes from Jas J. Corbett, Champion of the World - Sept. 7, 1892.” Inscription and signature are strong with very little fading, although there is a crease running through it. Grades 7-8 out of a possible 10, with the latter half of running into the darker part of the background. Photo has a few creases. VG-EX. Double matted to 6.5x10”, framed to 12.5x17”.
