Arthur Miller her husband, wrote this haunting screenplay as a valentine to Marilyn and this becomes apparent from this script. The making of the film was bittersweet, it was the last movie (completed) for Monroe and Gable before they died. This is a revised copy of The Misfits script (March 1960) with the initials “M.M.” on the title page, and many penciled notes, in her hand, for the development of her character “Roslyn”. The lines of her character are underlined in hot pink ink (befitting Monroe) and her character’s name is circled in the same color throughout. At the top of the title on the cover Marilyn has written rather cryptically “The effort is made by one’s will”. Marilyn has made notes that seem to describe her inner turmoil and feelings of despair, she makes comparisons to her own life and loves. There is a reference to Joe DiMaggio, on page 37, Roslyn has the line “I didn’t want children. Not with him,” Marilyn has written “Like with J.D.”. On page 72, when Perce is thrown from his horse during the rodeo, Marilyn writes “this is the most dramatic thing so far - its- as if something has happened to her [Rosyn] - she is lost”. Also references to her sexual prowess and effects on men. On page 16, Marilyn writes “lean back, stretch, unconcerned feminine sex”. This mimeographed typescript is 147 pages. Script is three-hole punched and bound with three brass rivets. The different settings (“Ranch House, Car, Bar Mustanging” ) marked index tabs. The title page has some creasing and edge wear, as does the back page, and some margins are frayed inside, Marilyn Monroe used this script, she wrote notes, memorized her lines, this role, was everything she wanted and everything she feared so it is natural that there would be some wear.
