A phenomenal piece of 19th century New England artistry is this cedar cigar box. Theme is the Boston Strong Boy, John L. Sullivan. Features design burned on the top of the lid with the words, “The Champion John L. Cigar.” Underneath the lid is pasted-on graphics of Sullivan in gentlemen’s clothing and “The Champion John L. Cigar, manufactured by MT Downing & Co. Boston.” The same design is pasted on the left side of the outside of the box. The rest of the paper which once lined the inside of the box is now almost completely removed. Certificate for “Cigar Makers International Union of America” & “M.T. Downing & Co.” labels still pasted to outside. Front of box with burned on lettering, “Reina Victoria.” VG-EX condition.
