Handwritten letter from major league umpire, Babe Pinelli (D-1984), is dated 2 days before he umpired in the most important World Series Game of his life, Don Larsen’s gem against the Brooklyn Dodgers. That would be Pinelli’s last official game as arbiter. What a perfect way to end a 22-year career - to call perfection in the ultimate baseball arena, then retire. Letter dated October 6, 1956 reads, “Dear Mrs. Von Baumbach, I received the two pictures O.K. and thanks for your trouble. Glad to know you were able to order my book. Sorry I cannot personally autograph book for you. Instead I am happy to enclose my autograph. No doubt you know I am working in the World Series. So far never a dull moment. Trusting you and Mr. Von Baumbach are enjoying the best of health. Sincerely, ‘Babe’ Pinelli.” “Never a dull moment” was a most apropos prelude to the event he would witness just two days later. A fascinating look at the 1956 World Series from the viewpoint of one of the most respected umpires in history. Written on “Hotel Commodore” stationary. NRMT. Comes with original mailing envelope, stamped Oct. 7, 1956 and filled out in his own hand.
