First edition of one of Hemingway’s most ambitious works is inscribed to the Naval commander who piloted his anti-submarine patrol in World War II. Legendary novel was born out of the Spanish Civil War and is offered in its original dust jacket with photographer’s credit (Arnold - Sun Valley) on the back cover. Book itself is in fine condition, dust jacket shows very little wear, protected by plastic wrap and enclosed in a cloth-covered cardboard case. A most vital inscription and signature from the Great Adventurer, vintage to 1943, sits on the front free endpaper, signed to a friend and Lieutenant he had met during his experience as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War: “For Lieutenant Carlos Rodriguez Alonzo, wishing him all good luck always, from his friend, Ernest Hemingway. La Habana - 1943.” Inscription is slightly bled in a couple spots due to wetness but his rare full name signature is untouched, grading a “9” out of a possible 10. This is the most significant book to come out of the Spanish Civil War, authored by the great American novelist, who had a lifelong obsession with the national conflicts in Spain. His interest compelled him to support the Loyalist cause, taking 4 separate tours in Spain as a war correspondent. A true American classic with a most valuable and historically meaningful inscription from an American literary giant.
