Dated Jan 23, 1800, the letter contains superior subject matter regarding a eulogy held in Boston for the late, General George Washington, who died 5 weeks before on December 14, 1799: “I pray you to accept my thanks for a copy of your eulogy on General Washington which I glad received and have read with great pleasure…” The letter is especially meaningful as John Adams was George Washington’s handpicked successor. This is the second President of the United States commenting on the death of the first president, his friend and mentor. He was his Vice President and his national position was second only to Washington in the creation of the government of our United States.
