The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri is a masterpiece of Italian Literature. The poem was written in three parts from 1307 to 1321. Dante, guided by Virgil, goes through the nine circles of ENFERNO to the top of the mountain, PURGATORY, where he meets Beatrice who takes him to PARADISE. Between 1951 and 1960, Dali created 100 watercolor drawings to interpret the Divine Comedy. These works have been created using a wood engraving technique, which is one of the most labor-intensive methods of artistry with the final result considered by most to be the most beautiful. With this technique, wood engravers carved 3,500 blocks for the prints that make up the Divine Comedy suite. These woodblock engravings were created over a 14-year period (1951-1964). The suite was published by Les Editions d'Art Les Heures Claires, Paris, France between 1960-1964. Original text from the poem in french included. We have an LOA from Les Edition d'Art and an LOA from Albert Fields, the only acceptable authenticator of Salvador Dali in the U.S. There are 98 woodblock engravings in 3 red, purple & blue slipcase boxes (2 missing). Each print is valued from $300-$500. Each measures 10.5x13" (not including the mattes). EX to NRMT.
