Adorable hand carved wooden figure is black boy sitting on a watermelon. Made in the 1950's, the piece is hand carved, covered with a special patina, then painted. The subject possesses a precious smile and holds a piece of watermelon in both hands with a bite mark out of it. In barefeet and overalls, he is just irresistable. A wonderful piece of Black Folk Art Americana. Some light foxing throughout. Some cracks on his back and arms, the watermelon on which he sits is badly cracked. Overall presentation is charming. Artist is unknown, but the initials, "P.W.G." carved onto the back of his shoulder. 17"wide and weighs 50lbs.
