Penned just a few short weeks, 2nd August 1876, after our nation’s centennial anniversary during his stay in London. On “Geo. Campbell & Co.” letterhead Davis thanks an unknown Colonel for his “kind letter with the enclosed samples of your invention for postage stamps”. Jefferson continues on, “the issue of postage stamps is a governmental function, and that this government claims the right to use for its purposes all patents.” All ink is bold and black with a very fresh look. The signature itself is an 8/10. The EX letterhead has a light tone that only adds to its charm. Original mailing folds. A splendid crossover piece for the philatellic and autograph collector.
