Displayed is an Original News Service Type I photograph of Hall of Famer Tris Speaker, known as "the Gray Eagle". Speaker played in the Major leagues from 1907-28: Boston Americans/Red Sox (1907-16), Cleveland Indians (1916-28), Washington Senators (1927), Philadelphia Athletics (1928). A center fielder, he batted a career .345, with the all-time record in doubles (792). He was an AL MVP (1912), AL batting champion (1916) and a 3-time World Champion. Speaker was a marvelous center fielder who played extremely close to second base. Thus, on grounders to center field, he often threw out batters at first or forced runners at second base, sometimes making the force at second by himself. Speaker still holds MLB records - for an outfielder - in assists, double plays, and unassisted double plays. Speaker was also a Major League manager.

The back of the photo has a Pacific & Atlantic Photos stamp. Also, along with the item is a suggested slug line for the photo, which reads in part, "Ty Cobb, former manager of the Detroit Tigers and Tris Speaker, former manager of the Cleveland Indians, were linked in an investigation conducted by Baseball Commissioner Landis involving an alleged irregularity of a game played between the two clubs on Sept. 25, 1919....Photo shows Tris Speaker." The investigation ultimately cleared Cobb, Speaker and two pitchers, Dutch Leonard (Tigers) and Joe Wood (Cleveland). The photo, over a century old, exhibits some very slight darkening. The photo shows some slight crinkling and some small creasing in three spots and an editing pencil line of about a quarter inch in the lower right corner. The enclosed paper slug line has some paper loss and darkening. The back of the photo shows "Speak", written in pencil by an unknown hand. The offering comes with a PSA LOA for the TYpe I photo.
