September 21, 1951, Lions vs. Yankees hand-painted game ball presented to Bobby Layne. "Houston, Sept. 21, 1951, Lions 28, Yanks 14, for Bobby Layne" is painted on this Wilson Official NFL (Bell Commissioner) game ball. The game took place in front of 48,000 fans in Houston Texas, and was a preseason game. The ball shows heavy signs of use, including paint loss, and is partially deflated. The ball is autographed, and comes with a LOA from JSA, verifying the authenticity of the 19 signatures. However, the signatures are almost entirely faded. Also accompanying the ball is a LOA from Alan Layne, Bobby Layne's son. In the letter, Alan describes his dad as, "a free-spirited All-NFL quarterback who led the Detroit Lions to 4 divisional crowns and 3 NFL titles during the 1950s. He was the NFL scoring champ in 1956 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967." In the letter, he also verifies that this ball is from the September 21, 1951 game.
