A left guard, he was a very intelligent player who made few mistakes and committed few penalties. Known as the "Hog," he was a key player in the Patriots' line season-after-season. He was named to both the Patriots' NFL 75th Anniversary Team and the Patriots' 100th Anniversary Team. He has been inducted into both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
Thurman Munson played his entire Major League career as a catcher with the New York Yankees. He batted a career .292 with 113 home runs. He was a 7-time All-Star and a 3-time Gold Glove recipient. Munson was a pilot, and he was practicing landings and take-offs at Akron-Canton Airport on August 2, 1979, near his home, when his pilot errors caused his plane to crash, and Munson died of asphyxiation from the crash.
The offered signed award has raised sculpted images of Munson, John Hannah, and an unidentified woman athlete. The award reads, "THE THURMAN AWARD/Association for the HELP of Retarded CHILDREN." A 1x3" plaque at the bottom of the award reads, "JOHN HANNAH/1983." The MUNSON AWARD is 13.5" across and it is 10.75" high. The metal award weighs eight (8) lbs., 1.5 ounces. Using a fine-tip marker that wrote in gold-colored ink, Hannah signed his name on the raised football helmet in the sculptured design. The award is in EXCELLENT condition.
