The 1984 film, The Natural, starring Robert Redford as the fictional New York Knights, of the National League, baseball player Roy Hobbs, is based on a 1952 novel of the same name, by Bernard Malamud. Offered is a Roy Hobbs "The Natural" New York Knights replica home jersey. The film, the first movie produced by Tri-Star and directed by Bary Levinson, received four Academy Award nominations. The novel and film have many mythical qualities, with the novel being inspired by the legends of King Arthur and his court. In addition to Redford as the leading man, the film starred Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Bassinger, Barbara Hershey, Robert Prosky, and Richard Farnsworth. In the movie, which is loosely based on the novel, Roy Hobbs portrays a 19-year-old pitching phenom who is shot by a crazed woman, based on the real life shooting of the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Eddie Waitkus, by a delusional woman. To prepare for the film, Redford, a natural athlete and a superior skier, practiced a swing modeled after that of Ted Williams. Much of the film was shot at Buffalo's War Memorial Stadium, which dated to 1937 and was razed in 1988.
The offered Knights jersey is off-white, with blue pinstripes. It has a "Maple Athletic Sportswear" tag in the neck. On the left sleeve is a "1839/1939 baseball Centennial" patch. The right sleeve has a "Thunderbolt" patch, symbolic of Roy Hobbs making his own bat, "Wonderboy," out of a scorched tree that was hit by lightning. On the chest is "Knights" in sewn-on black letters and orange trim (the same colors as New York City's former National League team, the New York Giants). Five white buttons run down the front. On back is the numeral "9" in a sewn-on numeral that is black, with orange trim. The jersey has a few small stains on the front, mostly on the outside tail. Except for these minor imperfections, the jersey is in excellent condition.
