Milwaukee Braves home jersey worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Hank Aaron during the 1964 season. Graded A8.5 by MEARS. All Hank Aaron Milwaukee Braves jerseys are scarce, with fewer than five having appeared at auction in the past twenty-five years. This is the earliest Hank Aaron flannel jersey we have ever offered and the only 1964 home example we have ever seen. It is also new to the hobby. Our consignor's father obtained this jersey privately in the early 1970s and it has remained in the family's sole possession since that time. The jersey market for players of legendary stature, such as Aaron, has been growing exponentially in the past five years. While we have no way of knowing what the final price will be for this jersey, history tells us that whatever the amount, many collectors will probably look back a few years from now at the opportunity that was missed.
The white flannel button-down jersey is lettered "Braves" across the front and features the number "44" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in red on navy tackle twill. A white strip tag in the collar displays the player's name, year, and set number ("H. Aaron 64 Set 2") chain-stitched in black. A "Wilson 42" label appears on the left front tail. The Braves "Screaming Indian" patch is located on the left sleeve. Following the 1964 season this jersey was sent down for use in the minors (a common practice), at which time Aaron's name was removed from the reverse. Despite the removal, one can still clearly see the outline of the name "H Aaron" on the reverse, directly above the number. Aside from the name removal, the jersey is original as issued and displays heavy wear, including some scattered staining on the reverse.
Full LOA from MEARS (graded A8.5; base grade of 10, with 1 point deducted for the removal of the name, and a half point deducted for the light stains).
