Displayed is a July 21, 1966, Cooperstown, New York Hall of Fame newspaper article signed by Ted Williams, then scheduled to be inducted, along with famed manager Casey Stengel, into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday, July 25, 1966. The article is dated on back where "Cooperstown, N. Y." is printed at the top of the page, but the name of the newspaper is not on the back of the clipping. It appears that the newspaper was a local weekly. The clipping has black and white photos of both Williams and the other upcoming inductee, manager Casey Stengel.
Williams played his entire 19-year Major League career with the Boston Red Sox (1939-42 & 1946-60). Williams served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict as a pilot and missed the equivalent of almost five full seasons while in the Navy and Marine Corps. Still, the Splendid Splinter was a 2-time AL MVP, a 2-time AL Triple Crown winner, and a 6-time batting champion. He belted a lifetime 521 home runs.
The newspaper clipping measures 4.2x14". The piece discusses the upcoming Hall of Fame induction ceremony as well as the approaching Hall of Fame game, between the 1965 World Champion Minnesota Twins and the 1964 World Champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. The news clipping has somewhat darkened because of the passage of time. Williams used a blue fine tip marker to craft a flowing, neatly bold signature, nicely placed belong his photo in the aforementioned article. Aside from some normal darkening of the article, the offering is in fine condition, and Williams' signature has held up beautifully.
