Displayed is a Booker T. Washington cut autograph set at the bottom of a photograph of this renowned leader of African Americans. Washington was born a slave in 1856, in Hale's Ford, Virginia. He was later freed from slavery when United States soldiers took control of the area of Virginia where he lived during the Civil War. He later graduated from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and attended Wayland Seminary. In 1881, he became the first leader of the famous Tuskegee Institute, in Alabama, a school for the higher education of African Americans. Washington's autobiography, Up from Slavery, became a famous book, and he spent most of his lifetime building up Tuskegee and raising funds for the education of African Americans.

The offered cut signature is displayed on a recessed rectangle measuring 0.5x3.5" at the bottom of a 3x5" photograph card. Washington used steel-tip fountain ink to write "Booker T. Washington." Machine printed on the impressive looking card is, "BOOKER T. WASHINGTON/Educator, Author, Orator, and Presidential Advisor." The photo card comes with a JSA LOA for the signature (Cert. Number: BB55708), which matches the certification number on the JSA sticker on the back of the photo card. The paper or card stock on which the signature is written displays with one half of the cut signature having an off-white backing and the other side having a light beige backing, most likely arising from a history of having half of the cut signature exposed to more significant sunlight than the other side. Aside from the aforementioned difference in the color backing of the signature, the offering is in EXCELLENT condition.
