Displayed is a historic 1969 Super Bowl III program signed by the three players who played quarterback in that game: Joe Namath of the New York Jets, and Johnny Unitas and Earl Morrall, of the Baltimore Colts. Super Bowl III was played at the Orange Bowl, in Miami, Florida, on Jan. 12, 1969. The competing teams still played in separate leagues: The Jets were in the American Football League and the Colts were in the National Football League. The NFL's Green Bay Packers had won the first two Super Bowls, and the Colts were 18 point favorites in this game. Earlier in the week, a brash Namath had publicly "guaranteed" that the Jets would win. Jets head coach Weeb Ewbank had formerly been the successful head coach of the Colts and he was familiar with some his former players who were still playing for Baltimore.

In the game, the Jets defeated the Colts 16-7. The Jets ran against what they perceived as a weakness: the right side of the Colts' defensive line. The Jets' fullback, Matt Snell, ran for 121 yards, mostly left, and a touchdown, and New York's kicker, Jim Turner, had three field goals. Namath completed 17-28 passes for 206 yards, with neither a touchdown nor interception. Morrall was very ineffective for the Colts, completing only 6-of-17 passes for 71 yards, no touchdowns, and a game-changing three interceptions. Johnny Unitas led the Colts to a 4th Quarter touchdown, but it was too little, too late. The game's lasting impact was that the Jets' upset made the football world take the AFL seriously, and helped to push forward the merger of the two leagues.

The program measures approx. 8.25x10.9". The cover reads, "SUPER BOWL/Third Championship Game January 12, 1969, ORANGE BOWL, Miami Florida/PRICE $1.00." On the cover is an image of the Jets' flanker, Don Maynard, battling for a pass with the Colts' Lenny Lyles, a defensive back. The program contains 120 pages, not including covers. The game program exhibits some very minor corner wear, with some indistinct smudges and small scratches on the cover and tiny spots of paper loss on the rear cover. Overall, the program is in very good condition. The three signatures were signed with a golden, metallic paint pen. Namath signed as "Joe Willie Namath" and appeared to add his number by writing "x12." After Morrall's signature is "15," with the numerical inscription likely added by Morrall. The three signatures average about 7 or 8/10. The offering comes with a JSA LOA for the three signatures (CERT. NUMBER: YY84922).
