Displayed is a 1949 "Tommy Traveler" [sic] Brooklyn Dodgers toiletry kit, most likely given to Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella. The attractive kit measures approx. 10x7.25x2" and has a tag inside reading, "GENUINE TOP GRAIN COWHIDE/MADE IN U.S.A." The kit is blue, and imprinted on the outside front, in gold-colored letters and numerals, "BROOKLYN Dodgers/NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 1949." Underneath the above is a metal tag with the initials "R.C.C." The only player who played for Brooklyn during 1949 with a first name initial of "R" and a last name initial of "C" is Campanella. He had no middle name, so the "R.C.C." lettering most probable referred to Roy "Campy" Campanella. In '49, Campy batted .287 with 22 home runs and 82 RBIs. In '49, teammate Jackie Robinson led the NL in both batting average (.342) and stolen bases (37), and he was the NL MVP. Under manager Burt Shotton, the '49 Dodgers went 97-57-2, but lost the World Series in five games to the New York Yankees.
The toiletry kit contains five items: 1) An empty metal case measuring 1.0x6.75x1.5"; 2) An empty metal case measuring 4.5x1.25x1.5"; 3) An empty case measuring 2.5x5.24x1.3"; 4) A bristle brush with a metal top, measuring 1.25x4.4x1.4"; A metal mirror measuring 1.4x5". There is also a leather slot, measuring approx. 1.5x8", for a comb, but no comb is included. Inside the case, an unknown hand has printed, in black marker, "FREE." The case is opened and closed with a still-working zipper. The kit case shows light to moderate use. There are some small, light scratches, and some "blemishes" on the cases, bristle comb, mirror, and the metal "R.C.C." tag, and some tiny impressions, small scratches, and minor creasing on the outside of the case. Despite the small imperfections resulting from some use, the kit still presents well. In fact, the kit is in very good condition, especially considering it is more than three-quarters of a century old.
Roy Campanella was one of the famed Brooklyn Dodgers "The Boys of Summer" profiled in Roger Kahn's book of the same name, and Campy, a 3-time NL MVP, is one of baseball's all-time greats, so this toiletry kit, probably given to Campanella, is likely an unusual remembrance from a baseball immortal.
