Vintage photograph of Hall of Fame manager Miller Huggins, taken by noted Boston baseball photographer Carl Horner, later used for Huggins' image on his 1909-1913 T206 tobacco card. The formal studio photograph captures Huggins in uniform as a member of the Cincinnati Reds during his 1904 rookie season. Although no date or photographer's credit appears on the photo or the reverse, this very image of Huggins appears on Horner's 1904 National League team composite display. The name "Huggins" is scripted in pencil on both the front and reverse. The number "5" appears in black in the lower left corner. Many of Horner's earlier portrait photos of Major League players were later used on various card issues, including the famous T206 set, which features the iconic Honus Wagner card (that image was also taken by Horner). Photos of players used for card images of always been highly prized by collectors, especially those of Hall of Fame players and from sets as popular as T206.
While the crystal-clear photo is definitely vintage, it has been affixed to a paper backing. As a result, it is not a candidate for submission to PSA and therefore no guarantees can be made with regard to its Type designation. Huggins is best remembered today for his managerial success with the New York Yankees during the 1920s, but prior to that he enjoyed a successful thirteen-year Major League career (1904-13) as a second baseman. Playing for both the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals, Huggins finished his career with 1,474 hits and a .265 lifetime average. The photo (3.25x5") remains in Excellent condition overall. Accompanied by a T206 tobacco card (Sweet Caporal back) of Huggins (Poor) that is perfect for display together with the photo.
