Original film negative capturing Babe Ruth prior to a game during the 1927 World Series at Forbes Field. Ruth is pictured sitting in the dugout signing a baseball, while three unidentified gentleman flank him on all three sides.

This remarkable image is one of four never-before-seen film negatives capturing members of the New York Yankees at Forbes Field during the 1927 World Series, all of which are featured in this auction. According to our consignor, these film negatives were among dozens stored in a coffee can that was discovered by his father while cleaning out the attic of a house he had recently purchased in 1972. The house was originally built in the 1930s by a family member of Joseph G. Armstrong, who was the former Mayor of Pittsburgh from 1914-1918. All the negatives in the can pictured Pittsburgh city scenes or locations, including many baseball images, but the four offered in this auction are the only remaining ones featuring either Ruth or Gehrig.

The Yankees swept the Pirates in four straight games in the 1927 fall classic. Since the first two games were played in Pittsburgh, on October 5th and 6th, the offered negative must date to one of those two games. Babe Ruth World Series images have always been highly prized by collectors, especially those dating from the historic 1927 season. The fact that this is a fresh, new-to-the-hobby example only adds to its appeal. The negative (3.5x2.5") remains in Excellent condition. Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
