The 1957 Brooklyn Dodgers were the last Brooklyn Major League baseball team, and in the summer of that season, Dodger owner Walter O'Malley and others were already secretly plotting the move of the franchise to Los Angeles. Presented is a Brooklyn Dodgers' team-signed Spalding Official National League Ball (Giles) from July 6, 1957, when the Dodgers hosted the Philadelphia Phillies at Ebbets Field, with the Phillies winning 9-4. In addition, the ball is dated and signed by the Phillies' Hall of Fame right hander, Robin Roberts, who used blue ballpoint ink to write, "July-6-57" on a side panel over his neatly written, bold signature. The Dodgers won the only World Series for Brooklyn in 1955, and won the '56 pennant, losing the World Series to the New York Yankees. In '57, the Dodgers finished at 84-70, in 3rd place.

The offered ball, possibly a game ball, has sixteen (16) signatures, signed in blue ballpoint ink: Hall of Famers -Roy Campanella (on sweet spot), Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, and Robin Roberts. Plus, Don Newcombe, Don Bessent, Ransom Jackson (sharing sweet spot with Campanella), Carl Erskine, Sal Maglie, Carl Furillo, Clem Labine, Johnny Podres, Elmer Valo, Gino Cimoli, and Phillies' pitcher Robin Roberts. The ball exhibits good use. There is a stain, approx. 2" long, on a side panel that goes over the autos of Furillo, Labine, Podres, and Gino Cimoli, but the stain does not obscure the aforementioned signatures, and they are clearly legible. The 16 autos rate 8/10 overall. With five Dodger Hall of Famers, plus Phillie Hall of Famer Roberts, the ball makes a fine remembrance of Brooklyn's final team in Major League Baseball.
