Displayed is a June 18, 1956, Mickey Mantle signed and inscribed Sports Illustrated cover (#v4 #25). In the '56 season, Mantle won the Triple Crown with an AL MVP campaign as the Hall of Fame center fielder led the New York Yankees to a World Championship. Mantle had a tremendous '56 campaign, as he led the American League with a .353 batting average. For the other jewels in the Triple Crown, Mantle had 52 home runs and 130 RBIs. For good measure, Mantle also led the AL in runs (132), slugging (.705), OPS (1.169), and total bases (376). Mantle played his entire Major League career with the Bronx Bombers, and he went on to hit 536 lifetime home runs, still the most in MLB for a switch-hitter. Mantle was a 20-time All-Star and a 3-time AL MVP. Mantle and Roger Maris captivated the baseball world in 1961 when they both chased Babe Ruth's single-season MLB home run mark of 60, with Maris tallying 61 round-trippers and Mantle falling short after being slowed by an abscessed hip.
The Sports Illustrated cover depicts a young Mantle, in only his 6th Major League season. The 8.75x11.5" magazine does not have its centerfold, pages 37-40. Using a blue, fiber tip marker, Mantle demonstrated his beautiful penmanship in his flowing, bold signature. Also using a blue, fiber tip marker, Mantle neatly added: "T. C. [Triple Crown] 52 HR./130 RBI, .353 BA - ." The offering has been encapsulated and comes with a JSA LOA for the Mantle signature, with the autograph receiving a JSA autograph grade of "10," (Cert. ZZ00245). The offering also comes with a CGC grade of 7.5 for the magazine.
