"The Houdini of the Hardwood" was his nickname, and Bob Cousy certainly was an on-court magician throughout his NBA career. Presented is a Bob Cousy, and his two daughters, signed copy of the November 20, 1955, Parade (Magazine) of The Sunday Courier and Press of Evansville, Indiana. Cousy was born in 1928, in New York City, and he grew up in the Manhattan and Queens Boroughs of New York City to parents who had just moved from France, and Bob spoke French for the first five years of his life. A broken right arm when he was a sophomore in high school forced Cousy to play left-handed while his right arm healed and he always credited his ambidextrous basketball skills to that incident. Cousy became a three-time All-American at College of the Holy Cross, and he was a key part of the Holy Cross squad that won the NCAA Basketball Tournament when he was a sophomore.
Cousy was the first famous NBA point guard. Cousy played his entire pro basketball career with the Boston, except for briefly playing as a playing-coach for the 1969-70 Kansas City-Omaha Kings. He garnered great acclaim for his flamboyant play, which included behind-the-back dribbling as well as behind-the back passes, very unusual for the times. He had 6,955 assists as a pro, averaging 7.5 assists per game lifetime and winning eight consecutive assist crowns in the NBA, 1956-63. He was a 13-time All-Star and averaged a lifetime 18.4 PPG. Cousy was the 1957 NBA MVP, and he was the key playmaker on six NBA Champions.
Parade was a national magazine supplement. The magazine measures approx. 10.6x12.6", and it has 40 pages, including the covers. The cover features a color photo of Cousy with two young daughters, Ticia and Marie Cousy, with all three Cousy's wearing a Boston Celtics uniform, number 14. Inside the magazine is a story nearly four pages long, showing Cousy dribbling behind his back on a playground court, and then shooting a successful lay-up, blindfolded, and minus opponents. The magazine has darkening of the pages, and some of the pages are loose, or only attached by a single staple. All of the Cousys signed in silver marker. Bob Cousy's signature is big, bold, and clearly written. The signed magazine comes with a PSA LOA for Bob Cousy's signature. There is a rip on the top left, with paper loss. There are also some other spots of paper loss, corner wear, and spotting. The charm of the photo and the signature of Bob Cousy, one of only four players to have been selected for the NBA's 25th, 35th, 50th, and 75th Anniversary teams, make this a nice NBA collectible.
