Presented is a 1940s-60s multi-sport scrapbook that features the autographs of George Halas, the famous player, coach, and owner of the Chicago Bears and Adolph Rupp, the legendary basketball coach of the University of Kentucky, with both autographs coming with a PSA/DNA LOA. The scrapbook also has eight additional autographs: Three inductees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame - Clair Bee, "Easy" Ed Macauley, and Bob Kurland; Pro Football Hall of Famer Mel Hein; three Green Bay Packers who are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame - Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, and Bart Starr, plus the autograph of Green Bay Packer Max McGee (with a PSA sticker), a star in the first Super Bowl.
Adolph Rupp achieved fame as the coach of the University of Kentucky Basketball Team. His Kentucky teams won four NCAA National Championships, a National Invitation Tournament Championship, 27 Southeastern Conference Championships, and 13 SEC Tournament Championships. At his retirement from coaching, his teams had won 876 games in 41 seasons, and at that point he had the most wins of any men's Division I coach in history. Rupp also coached the U. S. Olympic Basketball Team in 1948 to a gold medal. He is an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. George Halas was one of the co-founders of the American Professional Football League, which later became the NFL. The Halas-coached Decatur Staleys team moved to Chicago as the Chicago Staleys, but Halas said, "If baseball players are cubs, then football players must be bears!" Thus, the Staleys became the Bears. Halas was an end on the Bears, and as the long-time owner of the Bears, he coached the team on four different stretches. He also was a Major League player as a right fielder for the New York Yankees, briefly playing in 1919, and later joking that he was replaced by Babe Ruth, though it was really Sam Vick. Halas was one of the 17 Inaugural Inductees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The scrapbook, rough-hewn and presumably assembled by a youngster, measures approx. 9x11.2", and it has eight pages including covers. Each of the basketball signatures is on a separate page, and each has a homemade pencil drawing of the signatory. The other signatures have various forms of photos or images that were signed by the corresponding players or coaches. The scrapbook has some light stains and some darkening from the passage of time. The Mel Hein autograph has some tape over part of the last name and some blurring of the signature. Rupp signed a neat signature in blue ballpoint ink, and Halas added a "Best Wishes" inscription to his signature, in blue ink. Although the scrapbook is not fancy and has minor imperfections, it does have a boyish charm about it, and a nice multi-sport collection of signatures.
